Our last #HumansofCDP for Fall 2025 are Gavin Ross ‘26 and Mikayla Gutierrez ‘26!
Why did you become a facilitator?
Mikayla:
I was initially encouraged to take the course by a friend of mine, and I didn’t know what to expect at first, but I’m so happy that I did! I was taken by surprise with how much I learned about myself, my peers, and the world around me. I became passionate about the content and purpose of CDP, ultimately trying to connect us in a society that is becoming increasingly polarized and individualistic. My facilitators encouraged me to apply when applications opened; as I gave it more thought, I grew excited and wanted to help make a positive impact on others because the course had such a positive impact on me. The rest was history!
Why do you keep facilitating?
Gavin:
I keep coming back because I love creating a space where we can have conversations we wouldn’t otherwise have in a classroom setting. Being able to explore our individual perspectives and how it interacts with the world is such a unique experience to this space and I love using that learning to push for active and actionable change.
What do you admire about your co-facilitator?
Mikayla:
Gavin is very sociable and easy to talk to. He has wonderful energy that makes me feel willing to be open with him, whether we’re working together during our meetings or talking casually outside of CDP hours. I think establishing that connection is important for this job; I had some initial apprehension coming into this position for the first time, but he’s been very encouraging throughout the process and demonstrates genuine care and thoughtful engagement with CDP that I appreciate. We make a great team!
What have you learned from your co-facilitator?
Gavin:
Mikayla has taught me how to take in what our students have to offer. She does such a good job tailoring what we’re teaching to what our students are interested in speaking about, adjusting our meetings to both accomplish what we need to and make them more relevant to us, and so much more. I really admire her ability to connect with those around her and have really enjoyed working with her this semester!
